TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Student Executive Board of Indonesia (BEM SI) and the Student Executive Board of the University of Indonesia are set to hold a protest titled #IndonesiaCemas on Monday, October 20, 2025. The date coincides with the first anniversary of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka's administration.
Central Coordinator of the BEM SI Alliance, Muzammil Ihsan, confirmed their planned protest on Monday. "Yes, that's correct," he said on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
The protest is motivated by the current difficulties faced by the public in finding employment and the increasing cost of living. "Looking at the one-year anniversary of the Prabowo-Gibran administration, it increasingly makes us anxious about the future of Indonesia," as stated in the invitation poster from BEM SI.
The protest will demand and push for policies that do not favor the people to be revoked. The assembly point for the demonstration will be at the Horse Statue in Central Jakarta. The demonstration will commence at 1:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
Posters for the demonstration from the University of Indonesia also circulated on social media. Posts on the official Instagram account @bemui_official also contained a call to action with a title similar to that of BEM SI.
UI's Student Executive Board is carrying the theme 'OneYearIsEnough, Suffering and Oppression of the People'. "The one-year administration of Prabowo-Gibran serves as an indication that public policies have not sided with the people. Instead of realizing prosperity and social justice, power is increasingly distant from the spirit of democracy and the ideals of reformation," as written in the demands narrative from BEM UI.
The location and time of the protest are the same as planned by BEM SI. However, for the assembly point of the BEM UI protest, it will be held at the FISIP UI Field. "The assembly point for the protest by BEM UI is at the Horse Statue and the Presidential Palace in Jakarta."
Here are the demands from BEM UI:
1. Stop repression and criminalization of all Indonesian citizens, and release all action participants.
2. Revoke territorial commands of the Indonesian National Military and execute police reform.
3. Realize a progressive and pro-people economic system.
4. Realize true democracy in line with the principle of people's sovereignty.
5. Realize genuine agrarian reform and establish sustainable eco-socialism.
6. Establish inclusive and high-quality free education.
7. Create a healthcare system that prioritizes the people's welfare.
8. Revoke anti-people policies and emphasize fair justice.
Tempo has tried to contact members of BEM UI, but as of writing this article, BEM UI has not responded.
