TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Batam City Government has issued Circular No. 53 of 2025 regarding the 2026 New Year celebrations. A key point in the document is the prohibition of fireworks and firecrackers on New Year's Eve.
The circular explains that the ban is an act of empathy and solidarity for the victims of natural disasters in Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and other regions across Indonesia.
Furthermore, the rule aims to maintain public peace and order during the holiday.
The letter, signed by Batam Mayor Amsakar Achmad, urges all residents to celebrate the New Year in a simple and meaningful way without excess. One suggested activity is for citizens to gather donations for disaster victims.
"Refrain from lighting fireworks, firecrackers, and other activities that may disturb the peace and order," stated the circular signed on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
In his statement, Amsakar Achmad noted that this appeal aligns with instructions from the Indonesian National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who recommended against using fireworks during year-end events.
"This is a form of our concern and empathy for our brothers and sisters affected by natural disasters. We invite the public to celebrate the New Year in a simpler, more meaningful, and prayerful manner," said Amsakar.
Previously, fireworks displays were a highlight for Batam residents. Popular gathering spots included Engku Putri Square, Tanjung Pinggir Beach, Senyum Hill, and various beaches along the Batam coast.
Call for Fireworks-Free Celebrations in Other Cities
Batam is not alone in its push for a quieter celebration. Several other Indonesian cities are calling for New Year celebrations without fireworks.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung asked for a similar gesture of solidarity toward disaster-hit regions in Sumatra. Pramono clarified that this is an appeal rather than a strict ban. While the Jakarta Provincial Government will not legally forbid individuals from lighting fireworks, the Governor asked residents to show restraint on New Year’s Eve.
Meanwhile, the provincial and municipal governments in Yogyakarta stated they will not prohibit fireworks for the public, but the government itself will not host any fireworks displays during the New Year transition.
