TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's 80th Independence Day ceremony was not only held at the Istana Merdeka, Jakarta. The Independence Day ceremony was also held at the Nusantara Capital City (IKN), led by the Head of the IKN Authority, Basuki Hadimuljono.
During the ceremony, Basuki stated that the celebration of Indonesia's 80th Independence Day is an important momentum to build Indonesia from the heart of the archipelago, as well as to realize a global city for all. "As the capital of the future, IKN becomes a symbol of new spirit so that this independence commemoration is not only a reflection of the struggles of our heroes, but also a moment to strengthen our collective determination to build Indonesia into a more advanced nation," he said at the Ceremony Plaza in the Core Zone of the Central Government (KIPP) IKN, Penajam Paser Utara Regency, East Kalimantan, on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
Basuki also invited all participants to observe a moment of silence as a form of respect for the nation's heroes, especially the Proclaimers, Sukarno, and Mohammad Hatta. "In remembrance of the services of the nation's heroes and fighters, especially the founders of the nation, Bapak Bung Karno and Bung Hatta, the moment of silence begins," said Basuki, followed by all attendees with solemnity.
The ceremony at IKN was attended by approximately 1,500 participants, including OIKN employees, TNI and Polri representatives, BIN, representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Housing and Residential Areas, Ministry of Public Works, Bank Indonesia, students and teachers around IKN, as well as partners. The ceremony was led by Basuki Hadimuljono as the inspection officer, with Colonel CPM Joni Kuswaryanto serving as the ceremony commander, who is also the Coordinator of the IKN/Binda Kalimantan Timur Region. The flag bearers were students from Penajam Paser Utara who had also served in the previous year's Independence Day ceremony at IKN.
The participants of the ceremony also enlivened the event by wearing traditional Indonesian attire. A performance by a local band added a solemn atmosphere before the ceremony began, kicking off the series of activities.
The ceremony also featured performances by the Twilite Orchestra and Twilite Chorus, led by Addie MS. In addition, comedian Parto Patrio was present to enliven the 80th Independence Day celebration at IKN.
Nadya Amelia, one of the participants, expressed her pride in being able to celebrate Independence Day directly at IKN. "Of course, I am proud to be part of the flag-raising ceremony at IKN. It was not only solemn, but also special with the performances of Addie MS and Parto Patrio, which enlivened the event," she said.
Even though President Joko Widodo led the 79th Independence Day ceremony there the previous year, Indonesia's 80th Independence Day ceremony was not held at IKN due to inadequate infrastructure. Previously, plans had been made for Prabowo to lead the ceremony at the Istana Merdeka while Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka was in IKN. However, these plans were not carried out.
