TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), Perry Warjiyo, announced BI's plan to broaden the reach of Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) services to India and Saudi Arabia. The expansion comes after the Qris collaboration between countries was established with Japan.
BI is also in the process of forging partnerships with South Korea and China. "We are also in the process with South Korea alongside Saudi Arabia and India," Perry said during a meeting with the House of Representatives Commission XI, on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
Perry did not provide detailed targets for the expansion plan. However, the service expansion is part of BI's payment system policy for QRIS usage domestically and internationally.
On August 25, BI announced that Indonesian visitors to Japan, including Osaka, can use QRIS. Transactions with this service can already be conducted at several tenants in Pavilion Indonesia in Osaka, Japan. Meanwhile, the QRIS service in China is expected to be usable by the end of 2025.
BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta previously stated that QRIS could be used in South Korea next year. "Perhaps in the first half of next year, we can already use it in South Korea," she said at the National Fintech Month (BFN) opening event at Wisma Danantara, Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
Filianingsih also stated that by September 2025, QRIS had reached 10.33 billion transactions, or 158 percent of the initial target. This digital payment system has reached 58 million users and 41 million merchants across Indonesia.
The majority, or 90 percent, of the merchants using it are micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Filianingsih stated that the service has also been used in other neighboring regional countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.
