TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Indonesia's Muhibah Angklung Team from Bandung plans to tour several cities in the continent of Australia. According to the team leader, Maulana Syuhada, the tour will take place between 19 August and 8 September 2025 starting from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra. 'The tour plan initially came from an invitation by the IndOz Conference, a meeting of Indonesian and Australian entrepreneurs,' he told Tempo, on Friday, 1 August 2025.
The number of entourage set to depart is 40 people, including students and university students. For the angklung music performance, Maulana has prepared dozens of songs from the Sundanese, Batak, Minang, Betawi, and Balinese regions, including their regional dances and 'Indonesia Raya.' Dozens of other songs include popular world tunes from Bee Gees, ABBA, Frank Sinatra, Maher Zain, and Metallica.
Timetable for Muhibah Angklung Team Tour in Australia
On 20-22 August in Brisbane, Muhibah Angklung Team will perform at the Brisbane City Hall during the IndOz Conference 2025 event. They will then hold a concert at King George Square during the 2025 People's Party.
Between 23-26 August, they will be in Sydney to perform at the Indonesian Community Council New South Wales event at the Korean Society Hall. The next location for the angklung music concert will be at the Australian Museum, followed by angklung playing training at schools.
On 27-31 August, Tim Muhibah Angklung is scheduled to be in Melbourne to provide angklung playing training at schools. The team will perform at a Street Concert at the University of Melbourne, and then a concert at Victoria Market during the Indonesian Culinary Association of Victoria (ICAV) event.
In Canberra on 1-4 September, they will perform a concert at Albert Hall Canberra during the diplomatic reception at the Indonesian Embassy. They will then conduct angklung playing training at schools, and another concert at the Indonesian Embassy during the Diaspora Canberra event.
Angklung Playing Training Boosts Interest in Learning Indonesian Language
The angklung playing training at schools, according to Maulana, also aims to increase the interest of Australian students in learning the Indonesian language, which is currently decreasing. If the interest continues to decline, the Indonesian language curriculum will be liquidated. 'So we also have that mission, to save the Indonesian language that already exists in the Australian school curriculum,' he said.
The total funds needed for the angklung music journey in Australia is Rp 2.5 billion. Currently, only about half of the amount has been collected. For accommodation, Maulana stated that they will temporarily stay with local residents to save costs. 'Because there is no budget for staying in hotels,' he said.
Meanwhile, transportation between cities will be self-funded, and plane tickets are still being sought. One of the efforts includes fundraising at a concert on the evening of 1 August 2025 at the West Java Cultural Park's Closed Theater in Bandung. In addition, the Tim Muhibah Angklung team has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Culture. 'If the Indonesiana funds are approved, the cost problem will be solved,' Maulana said. Previously, the Tim Muhibah Angklung team had performed in the four Australian cities from 16-28 January 2018.
