Australian Researchers Develop AI-Disrupter Tool to Combat Deepfakes

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Monash University and the Australian Federal Police are collaborating to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) system claimed to be capable of combating deepfakes and other harmful content manipulation.

The 'Silverer' AI-disrupter, currently being developed by the AI for Law Enforcement and Community Safety (AiLECS) Lab, utilizes data poisoning methods to subtly alter digital documents. As a result, content will be difficult to use for producing, manipulating, or distributing AI-based images and videos.

AiLECS researcher and project chair, Elizabeth Perry, stated that Silverer alters image pixels to prevent AI models from producing realistic replicas. Images to be uploaded on social media can be modified using this new system.

"In this case, it’s like slipping silver behind the glass, so when someone tries to look through it, they just end up with a completely useless reflection," said Perry in a written statement released by Monash University on November 10, 2025.

The name Silverer is inspired by the use of silver in mirror-making. This tool functions to "reflect" original images, making them unusable by AI systems.

Co-Director of AiLECS and Associate Professor at Monash University, Campbell Wilson, mentioned that it has been increasingly easy to create deepfakes, or fake images, due to the accessibility of open sources. "There is a very low barrier to entry for people to use these algorithms," he said.

The Silverer project, developed over the past year, is still in the prototype stage. AiLECS hopes that the tool can be utilized by the general public to protect their personal data on social media platforms.

The AiLECS laboratory is a research collaboration between the AFP and Monash University, launched in Melbourne in 2019. This research is funded through the AFP's Federal Government Confiscated Assets Account.

According to AFP records, there's an increase in AI-generated child sexual abuse materials distributed online. Perpetrators are leveraging generative AI to produce and distribute large quantities of fake explicit content.

AFP Commander Rob Nelson mentioned that data poisoning technology is still in the early stages of development but has shown promising results in supporting law enforcement. "Where we see strong applications is in the misuse of AI technology for malicious purposes," Nelson said.

He is optimistic that Silverer can assist investigators by reducing the amount of deepfakes that need to be filtered. Nelson stated that the police cannot entirely eradicate deepfakes at the moment. However, prevention efforts can be developed gradually.

"What we are doing is similar to placing speed bumps on an illegal drag racing strip. We are building hurdles to make it difficult for people to misuse these technologies," he said.
