TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Covid-19 infections are rising again in several parts of Asia. Although the virus is now considered endemic, recent data suggest a new wave is underway, likely driven by declining immunity and lower vaccination coverage, particularly among vulnerable groups, according to The Gulf News.
Which Countries Are Seeing a Covid-19 Surge?
Hong Kong
Covid-19 cases have surged in Hong Kong, with rising positive test rates and severe illness surpassing last year’s levels. In the week ending May 3, 31 deaths were recorded, mostly among those over 65.
Albert Au from the Centre for Health Protection described current virus activity as "quite high," citing wastewater samples and hospital visits. Pediatric cases are also increasing, many involving unvaccinated children. The wave is expected to peak within two to three weeks and could last up to three months.
Singapore
The Singapore Ministry of Health reported a 28 percent rise in Covid-19 cases for the week ending May 3, totaling about 14,200 infections. Hospitalizations climbed by 30 percent during the same period.
Authorities say there is no new variant driving the spike, instead pointing to waning immunity. Older adults and people with immune disorders are advised to get booster shots.
China
China has also seen a rebound in cases. Between March 31 and May 4, positivity among flu-like illness patients rose from 7.5 percent to 16.2 percent. Experts link this to decreasing antibody levels since the last wave ten months ago. While most cases are mild, hospital-based test positivity has doubled in five weeks.
Thailand
After the April Songkran festival, Thailand reported increased Covid-19 cases and two cluster outbreaks. Authorities are encouraging continued vaccinations, particularly for seniors and high-risk individuals.
What’s Behind the Surge?
Experts highlight several causes:
Waning immunity due to fewer recent booster doses or past infections
No emergence of a dangerous new variant
More frequent social interactions, including festivals
Covid spreading even in warm seasons, hinting at new seasonal behavior
Vulnerable populations, especially older adults and unvaccinated children
Should We Be Worried?
Not necessarily. Most experts compare the current wave to seasonal flu, with most infections resolving without severe complications. However, those at higher risk are urged to:
Get boosters if it has been over a year since the last dose
Wear masks indoors in crowded areas
Practice good hygiene and stay home when sick
Looking Ahead
The ongoing rise in cases during warmer months is challenging the idea that Covid would fade like the flu in summer. Authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore anticipate recurring waves and are focusing on preparedness, public messaging, and vaccinations.
Although the current strains are not more severe, low booster uptake and fading immunity are allowing the virus to re-emerge. Health experts stress the need for continued vigilance, especially for those most at risk.
