TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the successful ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia is a testament to ASEAN’s ability to uphold regional stability.
He explained that Malaysia, as the incoming Chair of ASEAN in 2025, was given the responsibility of facilitating the negotiations.
"Although the situation was dangerous and tensions were rising, I believed it was essential to bring both sides to the table. That effort proved to be possible," Anwar said during his speech at the ASEAN Secretariat in South Jakarta on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
Before the talks took place, Anwar spoke directly with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. He listened to their respective positions and encouraged both leaders to seek common ground in order to prevent further casualties.
Support from the US and China
Anwar also acknowledged the important role played by the United States and China in helping achieve the ceasefire. He said that both parties agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with encouragement from Washington and Beijing.
"I am grateful to Prime Minister Hun Manet and Acting Prime Minister Phumtham for showing leadership, and to President Trump and the Chinese government for their constructive roles," Anwar remarked.
He emphasized that lasting peace can only be secured through dialogue, mutual understanding, and a joint commitment to regional stability. These values, according to him, were clearly demonstrated by the collective effort to reach the ceasefire.
Upholding ASEAN Centrality in a Divided World
Anwar went on to say that the agreement reinforces the need for ASEAN to continue defending the principles that have maintained peace in the region.
He stressed the importance of adhering to the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in order to keep strengthening ASEAN as a community grounded in trust, cooperation, and shared prosperity.
He also noted that the world is currently experiencing heightened geopolitical tensions and increasing rivalry between major powers. "The global order is under significant strain and is fragmenting in ways we have not seen before," Anwar said.
In light of these challenges, he urged ASEAN to remain focused on unity, independence, and a shared vision. "ASEAN must act as a voice of reason and a resilient force for peace and prosperity," he concluded.
Indonesia Commends Malaysia’s Diplomatic Efforts
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto had earlier praised Anwar’s successful mediation.
Speaking at the 13th annual Indonesia–Malaysia consultation held at the Istana Merdeka in Jakarta, Prabowo said, "I congratulate Prime Minister Anwar for his role in resolving the Thailand–Cambodia conflict."
He also reaffirmed Indonesia’s support for Malaysia as it prepares to lead ASEAN next year and address other regional disputes.
