Another Shallow Earthquake Jolts South Bandung Due to Active Fault

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake once again struck the southern region of Bandung, West Java, on Wednesday morning. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a magnitude 2.9 tremor on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at 10:10 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

Hartanto, Head of BMKG II Tangerang, reported that residents in the Kertasari and Banjaran districts felt the tremors. The intensity was rated at II-III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. The tremors were felt by a few people and caused light hanging objects to sway, similar to the sensation of a truck passing by.

BMKG confirmed there have been no reports of building damage.

The epicenter was located onshore at coordinates 7.19 degrees South Latitude and 107.63 degrees East Longitude, approximately 21 kilometers southeast of the Bandung Regency seat in Soreang, at a depth of 5 kilometers.

"The earthquake was a shallow crustal event caused by local active fault activity," Hartanto stated on Wednesday.

A Series of Earthquakes

Since early November, a swarm of earthquakes ranging from magnitude 2 to 3 has rattled South Bandung. Daryono, Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, described the affected area as a complex deformation zone. "The fault system here consists not of a single line, but of multiple short fault segments," he told Tempo on Wednesday.

This latest event follows a magnitude 2.7 earthquake that struck on Monday night, November 17, at 11:40 p.m. WIB. That tremor was felt in Rancabolang, Rancabali, and Ciwidey (II-III MMI) and Pangalengan (II MMI). Its epicenter was located 22 kilometers southwest of the Bandung Regency center at a depth of 5 kilometers.

Earlier in the month, on November 4, a stronger magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck the region at 5:04 p.m. WIB. In Pangalengan, the intensity reached scale III MMI, meaning vibrations were felt clearly indoors.

The seismic activity began with a sequence of ten earthquakes over the weekend of November 1-2, 2025. The strongest in that series was a magnitude 3.0 tremor felt in Kertasari and Pangalengan.
