TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 6.8 earthquake again shook the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia, today, Sunday, August 3, 2025. The tremor is part of the series of earthquakes that struck the region since Wednesday, which triggered waves of tsunamis across many nations, including eastern Indonesia.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the 6.8 magnitude earthquake exactly at 12:37 p.m. Jakarta time.
"No threats of tsunami in Indonesia from this earthquake," said Daryono, the Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, in a statement after the earthquake, while urging coastal communities to remain calm.
"So far, there have been no reports of damaged buildings as a result of the earthquake," he said.
Similar to its main quake, the series of aftershocks until today are shallow earthquakes due to the subduction of the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench. Earthquakes caused by the subduction activity of continental plates are also known as megathrust earthquakes.
BMKG shows that there have been a total of 426 aftershock activities following the 8.7 magnitude earthquake, with the largest magnitude being 6.9 and the smallest 4.0.
In a separate explanation, Daryono revealed that a megathrust earthquake generates a tsunami by lifting the sea floor and seawater, which then flows in all directions. The movement of seawater that can reach the land is what is then called a tsunami. "The first tsunami is not necessarily the largest," he said.
Last Wednesday, the tsunami reaching Indonesian waters—caused by the Kamchatka earthquake—was less than half a meter (50 centimeters). Nevertheless, Daryono warned against underestimating small tsunamis. "Even though the height is only a few centimeters, it can be dangerous," he said.
Daryono also revealed that the BMKG Tsunami Gauge in Sarmi Beach, Papua, still recorded high sea level oscillations, marking that a tsunami still occurred until last Friday, although the scale had significantly dropped.
