TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Cairo has announced the official opening of the Indonesian language program at the Faculty of Language and Translation of Universitas Al-Azhar, Cairo, Egypt. The inauguration was carried out by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, on November 6, 2025.

In his address, Abdul Mu'ti regarded the opening of the Indonesian language program at Al-Azhar University as a significant milestone in the recognition of the Indonesian language as an international language.

"Language is not just a means of communication, but also a unifying force for the nation. Indonesian is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world," he said in his official statement on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

Abdul Mu'ti expressed appreciation to the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar and the university's leadership for their confidence and support towards Indonesia, as well as their role in nurturing Indonesian students to become pioneers in spreading moderate Islamic values.

The Rector of Al-Azhar University, Salamah Dawud, stated that the opening of the language program is a significant additional program offered at the university. "Indonesian has become the 15th language taught at Al-Azhar University," he said.

He also mentioned that the success of the program depends on the support from the Indonesian government, particularly in providing high-quality teaching staff. Salamah also noted that Indonesia holds a special place in the hearts of the academic community at Al-Azhar because its students are known for their noble and polite manners.

Furthermore, the Indonesian Embassy reported that Minister Abdul Mu'ti also met with the Egyptian Minister of Education, Mohamed Abdel Latif, to discuss the strengthening of cooperation in primary, secondary, and vocational education through the exchange of teachers and students, curriculum development, and the implementation of educational technology.

Both parties agreed that this collaboration would serve as a means to share experiences and improve the quality of education. They also emphasized the importance of character education and moral values for the young generation to be ethical and innovative.
