TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - AirNav Indonesia is intensifying its operational vigilance across Indonesian airspace to mitigate several potential flight disturbances during the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) 2026 period.
This measure is being taken to ensure the safety and smooth flow of air transportation amidst the anticipated surge in flight traffic and potential extreme weather conditions.
Capt. Nurcahyo Utomo, Director of Safety, Security, and Standardization at AirNav Indonesia, highlighted several primary factors of concern during this year's Nataru period:
"Potential extreme weather such as heavy rain, lightning, strong winds, and minimal visibility can cause delays or flight diversions," Nurcahyo stated during a press conference on AirNav Indonesia's Nataru readiness in Bandung on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
He emphasized that accurate weather information dissemination is a key factor in ensuring flight safety.
AirNav is also mindful of volcanic activity that may produce ash, potentially leading to the closure of airports or flight paths. To address this, intensive coordination is being carried out with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) to monitor weather conditions and volcanic activity in real-time.
Disturbances from wild and kite-flying balloons are also a concern, as they can jeopardize flight safety and necessitate route diversions. Wildlife around airports, such as birds and other animals, is also constantly monitored to minimize the risk of aircraft collisions.
"In addition, we also anticipate potential operational disturbances at airports and airlines that can impact flight delays and schedule adjustments," he added.
Anticipating Peak Traffic Density
Facing the peak of flight density, Nurcahyo noted that AirNav anticipates increased traffic due to extra flights and passenger surges. This condition can potentially trigger increased traffic conflicts, holding patterns, and a heavier Air Traffic Controller (ATC) workload.
Therefore, AirNav has prepared comprehensive anticipatory measures, including:
- Navigation Facility Readiness: Increasing readiness to ensure reliable Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance / Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) systems.
- Capacity Management: Implementing optimal capacity and flow management arrangements, including cross-unit operational coordination.
- Personnel Management: Prioritizing personnel fatigue management through effective shift scheduling, early briefings, and team communication.
- Maintenance: Ensuring preventive maintenance and technician readiness for quick responses in case of technical disturbances.
Furthermore, AirNav is implementing the new ATMAS Pontia (Air Traffic Management Automation System) to support the efficiency and accuracy of flight navigation services during the busy Nataru period.
"We are committed to ensuring the safety and smooth operation of national flights during the Nataru period," Nurcahyo concluded.
