TEMPO.COJakarta - Indonesia's Vice President Gibran Rakabuming urges the public to be more sensitive to students' mental health in creating a safe school environment. He expressed this in response to the explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta high school involving one of the students.

"I entrust all of us to take care, to be sensitive, and also to remind each other so that the incidents that occurred yesterday at one of the high schools in Jakarta will not happen again," said Gibran in Jakarta on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

According to Gibran, attention to the development of children is not limited to nutritional intake and physical health, but must also include psychological aspects and their social environment. He emphasized that schools should be a safe and comfortable place for all students.

"Schools must be a safe, comfortable place for our children, a place free from bullying," said Gibran.

Gibran also called on all parties, including teachers, parents, and the community, to take care of and be attentive to the mental health of children. Because, according to him, building a healthy and characterful generation cannot be separated from a positive learning environment free from violence.

The explosion incident at SMAN 72 Jakarta school, located in the Kodamar TNI Angkatan Laut (Indonesian Navy) complex, Kelapa Gading, occurred on Friday, November 7, around 12:15 PM local time. The explosion occurred twice around the school mosque during Friday prayers. The incident resulted in dozens of casualties suffering from burns and injuries from shrapnel, and caused panic in the school environment and the surrounding community. The alleged perpetrator is a student at the school.

Metro Jaya Regional Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri revealed that the student suspected of being the perpetrator is known to be reclusive and interested in violent content. The police have so far examined 16 witnesses including victims, teachers, students, as well as the suspected perpetrator or the child in conflict with the law.

"The suspect is known to be reclusive, rarely socializes, and is interested in violent content," said Asep at a press conference at the Metro Jaya Regional Police Headquarters on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
