TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday said he wanted a Palestinian state that is free of militarization, including Gaza.
He made the statement during a meeting with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah, the West Bank, as reported by the Palestinian news agency WAFA via Antara.
Abbas stressed that the current priority is an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the entry of humanitarian aid to stop the "war of hunger," as well as the release of hostages and prisoners.
He emphasized the importance of the Palestinian state taking full responsibility in Gaza with the support of the Arab and international communities, as well as the complete withdrawal of Israel.
He also called on Israel to stop settlement activities in the West Bank, cease annexation efforts, and end "settler terrorism," as well as release the withheld Palestinian funds.
Abbas reaffirmed his readiness to hold general elections, which would not involve political factions and individuals who do not adhere to the program and commitments of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), international legitimacy, and the principle of one state, one law, and "one legitimate weapon."
Meanwhile, Wadephul emphasized the importance for the Palestinian state to take over governance in Gaza after the end of the war, as it is the only legitimate entity representing the Palestinian people. The German Foreign Minister mentioned the significant importance of the Palestinian state in contributing to the reconstruction of Gaza.
Wadephul emphasized that his country is ready to support and contribute to the Palestinian Authority's reconstruction efforts.
He also urged Israel to release the withheld Palestinian funds, emphasizing that the funds are the rightful property of Palestine and their continued withholding threatens stability.
