TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Traveling to another country means entering unfamiliar territory. Showing respect for the culture and local residents is crucial. However, many overlook the etiquette when visiting others' territories.
Regardless of the tourist destinations being visited, whether it be a museum, temple, or bustling market, it is important to know what is allowed and how to do things. Here are some fundamental etiquettes that should be known when traveling abroad.
1. Local language
Quoted from Times of India, one of the simplest yet most meaningful things one can do when traveling abroad is to learn some basic phrases in the local language. The simplest could be "hello," "good morning," or "thank you" in the local language. By doing so, one shows effort, respect, and genuine interest in the local culture.
2. Manners
Whether staying at a 5-star hotel or short-term accommodation, treat the place with care. Imagine the place as one's own home, for example, properly disposing of trash, leaving towels as directed, and making an effort to tidy up the room before checking out.
3. Speaking loudly in public places
Some countries appreciate peace and quiet. Speaking too loudly in restaurants, trains, or public squares can attract unwanted attention and even make the local residents uncomfortable. Therefore, it is important to remain courteous and adapt.
4. Excessive use of phones or cameras
Recording strangers, taking photos, or being engrossed in a phone in cultural places can be deemed impolite. Ask for permission before recording private places or individuals. Even in busy urban areas, recording or taking selfies without considering personal space can be disruptive.
5. Rules in natural attractions
Some natural attractions, such as nature reserves or national parks, have rules against littering, feeding wild animals, or touching coral reefs. Ignoring environmental guidelines can damage the ecosystem and show disrespect for the natural heritage of that country.
6. Rules of courtesy at places of worship
When visiting places of worship, it is advisable to read the rules beforehand. For example, the prohibition of taking selfies in temples, churches, or mosques, or speaking loudly.
7. Respect the dress codes
Some places of worship have specific dress codes that visitors must adhere to. Sometimes wearing too casual clothing in an unfamiliar country can offend many people, especially in more conservative countries. Italians usually dress neatly. Although these are unwritten rules, tourists are advised to wear neat, unwrinkled, and fitting clothes, as quoted by Travel+Leisure.
8. Bargaining
Although bargaining is common in most countries, being too aggressive or impolite due to negotiating for a small amount can be deemed rude. If one wants to get a cheaper price, compare the prices of goods in tourist markets with less-visited areas or malls. In addition, showing hospitality or simply saying "how are you" can be very meaningful, as quoted from Fodors.
