TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Around 60 people have been reported dead and nine others are missing due to heavy rains and flooding that hit the northern region of China over the past week. In Beijing, 44 people were reported dead and nine were still unaccounted for as of Thursday afternoon, July 31. This information was conveyed by Deputy Mayor of Beijing, Xia Linmao, in a press conference, as quoted by Bangkok Post.
31 of the victims in Beijing came from a nursing home in the Miyun hilly district. This area was one of the worst affected by the worst floods to hit the Chinese capital in several years.
Rainfall Exceeds Annual Average
In Taishitun City, about 100 kilometers northeast of Beijing, floods swept through the streets, filling them with mud and fallen trees. "The flood came rushing in, just like that, so fast and suddenly. In no time at all, the place was filling up," said Zhuang Zhelin, a resident who was cleaning mud from his building supplies store.
According to Al Jazeera, heavy rains began pouring down over the weekend and peaked on Monday, July 28, in Beijing and the surrounding provinces.
In the Miyun district, rainfall reached 573.5 millimeters, close to Beijing's annual average of 600 millimeters. While in the northern area of the capital, rainfall reached 543 millimeters.
This condition caused the Miyun Reservoir, the largest reservoir in northern China, to reach its highest capacity since it was built in 1959. At its peak, the water flow into the reservoir reached 6,550 cubic meters per second, equivalent to about two and a half Olympic swimming pools every second.
In Hebei Province, which borders directly on Beijing, 16 people were reported dead due to extreme rainfall. In Chengde City, eight people died and 18 others were unaccounted for. The victims came from villages in the Xinglong area, about 25 kilometers from the Miyun Reservoir.
Still in Hebei, a village north of the reservoir experienced a landslide on Monday, killing eight people and leaving four others missing.
Evacuation and Government Response
The floods also caused extensive damage in various areas. Currently, more than 80,000 residents in Beijing have been evacuated from the most affected areas. Dozens of roads were damaged, and power outages occurred in at least 136 villages.
On Monday night, President Xi Jinping ordered all authorities to carry out comprehensive search and rescue efforts to minimize casualties. The government also halted construction activities, closed schools, and canceled outdoor tourist activities until the emergency warning is lifted.
