500 Shops in Taman Puring Market Destroyed by Fire

1 month ago 13

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Around 500 shops at Taman Puring Market in Kebayoran Baru Sub-district, South Jakarta, were engulfed in flames. The market, which sells a variety of shoes, clothes, and electronic equipment, caught fire on Monday afternoon, July 28, 2025.

The South Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Commissioner, Nicolas Ary Lilipaly, stated that there is a possibility that all 500 shops were burned down. He told reporters at the scene, "All of the approximately 500 shops were burned down because the fire in the middle has not been extinguished yet."

The shops at Taman Puring Market operate from 08:00 to 17:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Times). "However, at 17:00 in the evening, some had already closed, while others were still open," said Nicolas.

According to information obtained from the Kebayoran Baru Police Sector (Polsek), there were no audible alarms when the fire initially broke out.

During the fire, the police evacuated four detainees from the Kebayoran Baru Police Sector to the South Jakarta Metropolitan Police. The detainees were evacuated because the Kebayoran Baru Police Sector is located near the fire. Nicolas said, "Because this is adjacent to the Kebayoran Baru Police Sector, we evacuated (the detainees) to the police station."

From the start of the fire in the afternoon until late at night, the situation outside the Kebayoran Baru Police Sector was observed to be safe. The fire briefly spread to the police post but was extinguished by firefighters.

"Indeed, it had spread to the roof of the police post but it has been extinguished," said Nicolas.

The Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat) deployed 34 fire trucks to extinguish the fire at the location.

The incident occurred at 18:02 WIB, according to a written statement from the Fire Department's Command Center. The type of building that caught fire is a low-rise building in the Taman Puring Market complex.

Initially, the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency deployed six fire trucks to the location. They arrived at 18:08 WIB and started the extinguishing operation at 18:10 WIB.

According to Tempo's observation at the scene, the fire was completely extinguished around 20:00 WIB. Until nearly 21:00 WIB, the firefighters were still in the process of cooling down the fire.

The Transjakarta bus service in the vicinity of Taman Puring Market experienced delays due to the fire. The affected corridor was Corridor 13, with routes 13B and L13E.

"Corridor 13, Routes 13B and Route L13E are experiencing delays in arrival due to a fire around Mayestik. We apologize for the inconvenience," wrote PT Transjakarta via the @PT_Transjakarta social media account X.
