TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foreign Minister Sugiono confirmed that 101 Indonesian citizens have been evacuated from Iran and Israel. The evacuation of Indonesians from Iran was conducted due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
Sugiono stated that 97 Indonesian citizens were evacuated through land routes at the Iran-Azerbaijan border. They consist of 93 Indonesian citizens, embassy staff, and one foreign national who is the spouse of an Indonesian citizen. "They are currently resting in Baku," Sugiono said in Istanbul, Turkey, on Saturday, June 21, 2025, through a video statement shared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Sugiono was in Turkey to attend a meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The Deputy Chairperson of the Gerindra Party mentioned that the journey for the Indonesian citizens to cross the Iran-Azerbaijan border took about 16 hours. Sugiono mentioned that the evacuation process went smoothly and safely, although the border situation was slightly busier than usual.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had successfully evacuated 4 Indonesian citizens from Israel through Jordan. "All of them are in good condition, while we continue to communicate with our other citizens," Sugiono said. The former Deputy Chairperson of the House Commission I stated that he would continuously monitor this evacuation process.
Tensions between Iran and Israel have been escalating since Friday, June 13, when Israel launched airstrikes at several locations in Iran, including military and nuclear facilities. The Israeli airstrike prompted the Iranian Government to launch retaliatory attacks on several points in the country on the same day.
Israeli authorities reported at least 24 people killed and hundreds injured due to Iran's retaliatory attack. Meanwhile, Iran's media reported 639 people killed and more than 1,300 others injured in Iran as a result of Israel's attack.
Sugiono decided to raise the security alert status at the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran from Level 2 to Level 1, giving the green light to evacuate Indonesian citizens from the country. He conveyed this during a state visit to St. Petersburg, Russia, on Wednesday, June 18. According to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are currently approximately 380 Indonesian citizens in Iran, primarily in Tehran.
The Director of the Protection of Indonesian Citizens Abroad at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, revealed that about 194 Indonesian citizens are in Israel. Judha stated that some of them have requested evacuation following the recent escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran.
"There are 11 Indonesian citizens in Israel who have requested evacuation," Judha said in a video statement shared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Given the current escalation, he said, the evacuation preparations are being made by the Indonesian Embassy in Amman, Jordan. Indonesia and Israel do not have diplomatic relations.
