TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Youtube recorded a 20 percent year-on-year increase in watch time duration in Indonesia as of June 2025, which is double the achievement of the previous year.
"I call this an acceleration, because in 2024 the growth was only half. So, we are growing twice as fast as in 2024," said Google Indonesia Country Manager Veronica Utami in Jakarta on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.
Veronica stated that the surge in watch time indicates that YouTube is not only expanding its user reach, but also successfully maintaining viewer engagement. According to her, the main challenge for the video platform at the moment is to ensure that the audience actively watches, rather than just scrolling.
"From a survey conducted by Kantar, when people are on YouTube, the viewers are truly paying attention to the content and are engaged," she said.
She mentioned that YouTube has now become the digital platform with the largest reach in Indonesia, surpassing competitors, including social media and broadcast television. "(YouTube) surpasses Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and even Broadcast TV," said Veronica.
Google noted that the number of creators with more than one million subscribers has increased by 50 percent annually to 3,000 channels. She described this achievement as an improvement from 2015, when there was only one channel. The channel referred to belongs to the writer and comedian Raditya Dika. "These creators are the ones who make YouTube the center of global culture, meaning we call it the epicenter of global culture," she said.
A Kantar survey also showed that 92 percent of viewers in Indonesia consider YouTube creators to be trustworthy, especially in helping purchase decisions.
Head of Youtube Partnership Youtube Indonesia Suwandi Widjaja said that the company continues to support creators to grow and maximize the various facilities available on the platform.
One of the highlighted monetization tools is YouTube Shopping, which is considered to help creators improve the quality of content and increase revenue. This feature has been available in Indonesia since October, making Indonesia the third country to have early access.
"In YouTube itself, there are many features that help generate income. There are Subscriptions, Fun Funding, Super Stickers, Chat. Today we want to highlight the Youtube Shopping Affiliate. We hope Youtube Shopping can show how YouTube is a place that will provide sustainable monetization, not just one-time, starting from AdSense, Subscription, and others," he added.
