TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A shooting occurred Saturday afternoon, May 23, 2026, near the White House in the United States (US), injuring at least two people, including the shooter, local officials said, according to media reports.
Federal law enforcement agencies responded quickly after receiving reports of a shooting near the White House complex, with an active investigation underway in Washington, D.C.
Media reports, citing officials, indicated that at least one person suffered serious injuries.
"FBI is on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds - we will update the public as we’re able," FBI Director Kash Patel said via social media.
The Secret Service confirmed reports of a shooting near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW near the White House complex.
"We aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and are working to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground," the agency said.
Fox News reported that a gunman approached the White House from Gate 17 around 6 p.m. local time and fired three shots into the building, drawing return fire from Secret Service agents who neutralized him.
A civilian was reportedly wounded in the exchange of gunfire, Fox News reported, while it was determined the gunman did not breach the White House perimeter.
President Donald Trump is "safe," according to Fox News as cited by Antara.
The local police department said the Secret Service is handling the incident at the intersection of Gate 17 and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and is asking the public to avoid the area.
The White House was briefly placed on lockdown, although it was later lifted.
