TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Zohran Mamdani and Rama Duwaji drew public interest after quietly tying the knot at a New York civil registry office, holding a modest ceremony without a large guest list. Their wedding took place shortly before Mamdani officially launched his campaign to run for New York mayor under the Democratic Party.
During his victory speech as the Democratic nominee for Queens, Mamdani publicly acknowledged and thanked Duwaji in front of his supporters.
Rama Duwaji began receiving more attention following Mamdani’s rise in politics. She is an artist and illustrator whose work often centers on women’s experiences — from everyday life to broader social and political issues, including gender-based violence and armed conflict.
Among her notable illustrations is the story of Reem Ahmed, a Palestinian architect from Gaza who survived being trapped under rubble for 12 hours after an air strike that killed several members of her family.
Mamdani and Duwaji met through the dating app Hinge, long before he gained political recognition. In an interview with The Bulwark podcast, Mamdani said dating apps like Hinge can still be a meaningful way to find a life partner.

Getting to Know the Hinge Application
Hinge is an online dating application introduced in 2012, almost at the same time as the emergence of other popular dating applications such as Tinder.
Although both utilize the swipe system, Hinge was designed from the start with a different concept, focusing on meetings between users who have friend connections through Facebook.
Currently, Hinge is under the umbrella of Match Group, the parent company that also owns other dating applications such as Match, OkCupid, and Tinder.
How Hinge’s Features Work
Hinge provides several features designed to support users in building meaningful and lasting relationships, rather than just short-term matches. Below are some of the app’s key features:
Likes You
This feature allows users to instantly see who has liked their profile. When viewing the profile of someone who expressed interest, users can also see which part of their profile stood out. From there, they can decide whether to initiate a conversation.
Most Compatible
By analyzing user behavior and interaction patterns, Hinge recommends potential matches through the Most Compatible feature. This tool pairs users who are likely to be a good fit based on their preferences and engagement on the app.
Your Turn
To help avoid conversations that fade out, the Your Turn feature sends reminders to encourage users to reply or pick up where a chat left off. If there is no activity for 14 days, the conversation is moved to the Hidden Chats section so it does not clutter the main inbox.
We Met
After two users have exchanged phone numbers and met in person, Hinge follows up with a short survey about the experience. The feedback collected is used to improve the app’s matching algorithm, with the goal of connecting users to better-suited partners in the future.
