VP Gibran Acknowledges Backlash Over Soaring QRIS Users

7 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka said the rapid development of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) digital payment system users has made other parties uneasy.

In a monologue video titled Scan the QRIS: This is About the Nation's Economic Sovereignty, released by the Vice President's Secretariat in Jakarta on Sunday, May 18, 2025, Vice President Gibran mentioned that QRIS had provided a practical payment solution without the need to rely on cash, cards, or Electronic Data Capture (EDC) machines.

"So, it's not surprising that its usage has increased explosively and made others uneasy," said Gibran.

During the occasion, the Vice President stated that QRIS users had reached more than 56 million people, and the number of merchants had surpassed 38 million.

As of March 2025, Gibran said that data from Bank Indonesia indicated a 173 percent increase in QRIS transaction volume compared to last year, reaching over 1 billion transactions.

"Compared to last year, the transaction value increased by 149 percent, reaching Rp104 trillion. That's a significant amount," said Gibran.

Gibran stated that QRIS benefited customers and street vendors, home businesses, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in digitalization and access to financial services.

The Vice President mentioned that 93 percent of QRIS merchant users come from the MSMEs sector, indicating widespread digital adoption among small business owners in various regions.

Gibran also emphasized the importance of supporting the technology developed by Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Indonesian Payment Systems Association (ASPI) to create an inclusive and sovereign economy.
