TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Historical tourism has become one of Vietnam's appeal in the eyes of foreign tourists. Several remnants of the Vietnam War against U.S. aggression for two decades have become popular spots in the country. After the Cu Chi Tunnels, now a former secret military bunker in Vietnam is open to the public.

As reported by Vn Express, the bunker located in the Thang Long Imperial Citadel stored secret documents of the General Staff during the war against the U.S. The bunker has been opened to the public to commemorate the August Revolution (August 19, 1945) and National Day (September 2).

This event is part of a special exhibition series at the Thang Long - Hanoi Imperial Citadel Heritage Conservation Center showcasing important relics at the site. During the opening ceremony on August 19, the center's director, Nguyen Thanh Quang, emphasized that the world cultural heritage site of Hanoi not only preserves thousands of years of history but also revolutionary legacies with profound educational value.

The Role of the Bunker in the Vietnam War

The bunker project began on February 10, 1966 and was completed on June 30 of the same year, covering an area of more than 37.2 square meters. This bunker played a crucial role in helping the General Headquarters of the Vietnamese People's Army to maintain direction, management, coordination, and command of the military branches and battlefields.

The bunker was most frequently used in December 1972, when the U.S. Air Force bombed the capital and Haai Phong. Documents and artifacts exhibited for the first time included the C58 seal, stamps with the words "urgent" and "strictly confidential," encrypted message forms, coding pads, fountain pens, staff name blocks, and classified briefcases.

The exhibition combines archival objects with documentary films, panels, and audiovisual effects to depict the important role of the Cipher Department during the war, especially between 1972 and 1975.

Main Exhibition Rooms

Subsequently, delegates, guests, local residents, and tourists had the opportunity to visit two main exhibition rooms: House and Bunker D67 – The Path to Victory and Cipher Bunker – General Staff. The House and Bunker D67 portrayed one of the strategic command centers of the Vietnam Central Military Commission and Politburo, the venue for historic decision-making.

Constructed in 1967 as a reinforced concrete structure with 60 cm thick walls, this building became the meeting place of the Politburo for important decisions such as the Tet Mau Than Offensive (1968), the Paris Peace Accord of 1973, and the Spring Victory of 1975.

Traversing its corridors, visitors explored rooms that once stored Vietnam's most secret military communications and witnessed crucial intelligence processing.

Documentary film screenings, interactive panels, and automated audio guides help visitors clearly understand the role of the Cipher Department in coordinating Vietnam's resistance front from 1972 to 1975.

Director Quang stated that the Secret Bunker exhibition aims to maximize the value of these legacies, create a special landmark, and attract the interest of young people in national history.
