TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States has canceled the planned meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Hungary. The cancellation follows Russia's firm stance on hardline demands regarding Ukraine, according to the Financial Times, cited from Al Arabiya.
The decision was made after a tense phone call between high-ranking diplomats of both countries. Financial Times quoted individuals familiar with the matter.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Officials in the Russian government were also not immediately reachable for comment.
The scheduled summit in Budapest this month between Trump and Putin was postponed after Moscow insisted on its demands. Russia also demanded that Ukraine surrender more territory as a condition for a ceasefire.
Trump has supported Ukraine's call for an immediate ceasefire. Several days after Trump and Putin agreed to meet in the Hungarian capital to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry sent a memo to Washington. Russia emphasized the same demands to address what Putin referred to as the "root causes" of the invasion of Ukraine. Russia stressed territorial concessions, a sharp reduction in Ukraine's armed forces, and a guarantee that Ukraine would never join NATO, according to the newspaper's report.
The U.S. subsequently canceled the summit following a phone call between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. After the call, Rubio told Trump that Moscow showed no willingness to negotiate.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier this month that while Ukraine is ready for peace negotiations, the country will not withdraw its forces from additional territories as demanded by Moscow.
