Trump Announces U.S. Travel Ban on 12 Countries, Restricts Entry of Seven

1 day ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump has signed another executive order imposing a travel ban on people from 12 countries and restricting travel of those from seven other countries, the White House announced, as quoted from Al Jazeera on Thursday, June 5.

“I must act to protect the national security and national interest of the United States and its people,” Trump said in his order.

The banned countries include Afghanistan, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

The order also partially restricts the entry of people from seven other countries, including Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.

The order will come into force on Monday, June 9, 2025. Despite the full travel ban, the visas issued before that date will not be revoked.

Athletes, including coaches and immediate relatives, traveling for the World Cup, Olympics, or other major sporting events are exempted.

Citing Channel News Asia, the countries facing a total ban were deemed insufficient in "screening and vetting and determined to pose a very high risk to the United States."

In a video message released by the White House, Trump said the recent attack on a pro-Israel rally in Boulder, Colorado, underscored the "extreme dangers" posed by foreign nationals whose entry is "not properly vetted."

"As well as those who come here as temporary visitors and overstay their visas. We don’t want them," he said, as quoted from The Guardian on Thursday.

Trump claimed there were “millions and millions of these illegals who should not be in our country.”

“We will not let what happened in Europe happen to America,” he said, adding, “very simply, we cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen those who seek to enter the United States.”

“We will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm.”

The list of countries in Trump's travel ban is subject to revision "based on whether material improvements are made," and new countries could be added "as threats emerge around the world."

Trump's decision to impose a full travel ban comes amid waves of hardline immigration policies that the president issued in recent months.

The Trump administration has blocked asylum claims at the southern border and canceled temporary protected status for immigrants from several countries facing humanitarian crises.

More recently, Trump signed an order to restrict foreign student visas at Harvard University and ordered U.S. consulates to screen the social media of every visa applicant seeking to travel to the university.

Trump also announced a ban on travelers from seven majority-Muslim nations during his first term in 2017. The policy went through several iterations before it was upheld in 2018 by the U.S. Supreme Court, but later repealed by former President Joe Biden in 2021.
