TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Transportation officially designates 36 public airports across Indonesia as international airports. The designation is stipulated in Minister of Transportation Decree Number KM 37 of 2025.
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated that this measure aims to strengthen the national aviation industry and promote more even growth of tourism, trade, and investment in various regions.
He explained that this policy is a follow-up to President Prabowo Subianto's instruction to open as many international airports as possible in various areas. "The President wants to accelerate economic turnover and tourism development in the regions," Dudy said, as quoted from the official statement on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
Dudy continued that Bandara Halim Perdanakusuma in East Jakarta will receive special treatment. International flights at this airport will be limited to non-scheduled commercial air transport, non-commercial air transport, as well as flights of presidential and foreign state aircraft.
Dudy also tasked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation with periodically monitoring the implementation of this decision. The international airport status will be evaluated at least once every two years to ensure that safety, security, and service standards are met. "Every airport operator must meet administrative requirements, including safety and international service aspects, no later than six months after the issuance of this decision," Dudy said.
