1. Australian Open 2025: 9 Indonesian Shuttlers Reach Quarterfinals
Nine Indonesian players advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2025 after a strong showing in Thursday’s round of 16 on November 20, while two others saw their runs end. All remaining representatives will compete for semifinal spots on Friday.
Men’s singles shuttler Alwi Farhan was the first to secure a place in the last eight. Playing the opening match on Court 1 at Sydney Olympic Park, the 20-year-old eighth seed defeated India’s veteran Prannoy H. S. in straight games. The win marked a confident performance against an opponent 13 years his senior.
In women’s singles, Putri Kusuma Wardani, the second seed, progressed after dispatching Taiwan’s Wen Chi Hsu.
Indonesia also swept all three of its men’s doubles matches. The pairs Fajar Alfian / Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, Sabar Karyaman Gutama / Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, and Raymond Indra / Nikolaus Joaquin each booked quarterfinal berths.
2. Taiwan Secures Hundreds of Millions in US Defense Contracts
Taiwan has received a contract approval for the construction of the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) air defense system worth $698.94 million from the United States, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Defense, as reported by Anadolu on Monday, November 17.
Washington has assigned Raytheon, a defense company under RTX, to produce equipment related to the system.
According to the statement, the NASAMS launcher units will be made in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, with a target completion date of February 28, 2031. This sale continues Washington's decision last year to approve three NASAMS units as part of Taiwan's $2 billion arms package.
According to a Focus Taiwan report, the Taiwan Ministry of Defense stated that NASAMS is capable of active surveillance, managing shooting operations, and integrating intelligence. Combined with the medium- and long-range air defense missiles they already have, the system can form a layered air defense network.
3. Indonesia Confirms Oil and Gas Purchases from the US Through Auction Scheme
Indonesian Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto confirmed that the import of oil and gas from the United States would continue to undergo a bidding process. This oil and gas import is part of a reciprocal tariff agreement and will be executed by PT Pertamina.
"There will definitely be a bidding process for the American vendors for the direct import," Airlangga told reporters at The Westin, Jakarta, on Thursday, November 20, 2025.
He also stated that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) related to the import had been prepared. Later, Airlangga said, the MoU would be a derivative of the finalized reciprocal tariff agreement. The government targets to finalize the tariff agreement with the U.S. by the end of the year.
According to Airlangga, the import of oil and gas from the U.S. can only be realized after the agreement is signed. He stated that the scheme for oil and gas import from the U.S. is open to the private sector. I
