TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of University of Indonesia (UI) students staged a protest at the Jakarta Regional Police headquarters on Friday, August 29, 2025.
The protest was staged in solidarity with online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers after one of them was killed by a Jakarta Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle during a demonstration at the People’s Consultative Assembly (DPR) the day before.
Tempo’s observations at the site showed that students began gathering at the UI Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) field at around 12:40 p.m. WIB. Some students were seen spray-painting banners, while others arrived in the university’s signature yellow jackets.
A total of 18 buses and 17 public transport vehicles were parked in the field to carry the students to the Jakarta Regional Police headquarters.
Several banners with slogans such as “Aparat Keparat, Polisi Pembunuh” (Wicked Apparatus, Killer Police) and posters featuring President Prabowo Subianto with the words “Public Enemy” were displayed on the buses.
The protest coordinator instructed students to bring supplies, including toothpaste, as a precaution against possible tear gas deployment by police.
UI Student Executive Board (BEM UI) chairman Atan Zayyid Sulthan said the demonstration was an expression of solidarity and concern over the death of the ojol driver who was hit by a Brimob tactical vehicle.
“For this protest, we are mobilizing around 800 to 1,000 students,” Atan said.
Before departing for Jakarta Regional Police, the students held a briefing and observed a 30-second moment of silence to honor Affan Kurniawan, 21, the ojol driver who died after being struck and run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle in Pejompongan, West Jakarta.
