TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Thai soldier was seriously injured by a landmine near the Cambodian border on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. According to Al Jazeera, the incident took place about one kilometer from the Ta Moan Thom Temple in Surin Province.

The Thai military reported that the soldier suffered severe damage to his left ankle after stepping on a landmine while on patrol. He is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

The explosion occurred shortly after both countries agreed to a ceasefire following deadly clashes that lasted five days last month. The fighting left at least 43 people dead and forced more than 300,000 residents on both sides of the border to flee.

Accusations of Ceasefire Violation

Thai Army spokesman Major General Winthai Suvaree said the incident shows Cambodia violated the ceasefire and international agreements, including the Ottawa Convention, which bans landmines.

He stated, "Cambodia continues to covertly plant landmines while the Thai army has consistently adhered to peaceful approaches and has not been the initiating party," as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Winthai warned that if violations continue, Thailand may exercise its right to self-defense under international law, as the country continues to lose personnel due to ceasefire violations and breaches of Cambodian military sovereignty.

Denial from Cambodia

The Cambodian Ministry of Defense denied the allegations, emphasizing that Cambodia is a proud and responsible member of the Ottawa Convention.

“Cambodia, as a proud and responsible State Party to the Ottawa Convention, maintains an absolute and uncompromising position: we have never used, produced, or deployed new landmines under any circumstances, and we strictly and fully honour our obligations under international law,” the ministry said in a social media post.

Cambodia suggested the Thai soldier may have triggered old mines left from the war decades ago after straying from the agreed patrol route.

Series of Border Incidents

Tuesday’s incident is the fourth in recent weeks. Three days earlier, three Thai soldiers were injured by mines in the area between Sisaket Province, Thailand, and Preah Vihear Province, Cambodia.

Earlier incidents on July 16 and 23 worsened diplomatic relations and led to a battle on July 24. The dispute centers on the ownership of the 11th-century Ta Moan Thom and Preah Vihear Temples along the 817-kilometer border.

The ceasefire, in effect since July 28, includes an agreement for ASEAN observers to monitor the disputed area and prevent further clashes.
