TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 17 scheduled Srilelawangsa train trips operating between Medan and Binjai on Thursday, November 17, 2025, were suspended due to severe flooding. The critical infrastructure failure occurred as the rails at kilometer KM 15+5/6 on the Medan-Binjai line sustained a collapse after being entirely submerged by water.

“We apologize for the inconvenience. We are working to handle the situation quickly and maximally so that the track conditions can be restored and train services can return to normal while still prioritizing the safety of passengers," affirmed Railink Communication Manager Ayep Hanapi on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

The Srilelawangsa train is an official airport service managed by PT Railink. This railway service also benefits from the Public Service Obligation (PSO) subsidy initiative within North Sumatra. Between January and August, the service registered a 41 percent increase in ridership, rising from 1.7 million customers in 2024 to 2.4 million.

Currently, the train routinely operates 20 daily round-trip trains on the Medan-Binjai corridor. It also facilitates three services on the Kualabingai-Binjai-Medan route and provides extended routes to Araskabu. This mode of conveyance has become a primary choice for the general public, offering a crucial alternative to the frequently congested road network.

Since November 24 and continuing through today, most regions in North Sumatra have been subjected to constant moderate to heavy rainfall. Twelve separate regencies and cities have been affected by a confluence of landslides, floods, falling trees, and tornadoes. As of Wednesday, November 26, at 10:00 p.m., a total of 148 separate natural disaster incidents had been officially recorded.

Based on the latest data compilation, there are 175 affected individuals, comprising 34 fatalities, 77 minor injuries, 11 serious injuries, and 52 persons still registered as missing. Concurrently, 1,168 residents have been officially documented as displaced across various temporary shelters. To manage the crisis, the North Sumatra Regional Police has deployed 1,030 joint personnel to the numerous disaster zones.
