TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sudan has rejected the new U.S. sanctions imposed on the country, calling the measures "unilateral and illegal" and "based on false accusations."
As ANTARA reported, the U.S. on Friday, July 17, announced the implementation of a second round of sanctions, after determining that the Sudanese army used chemical weapons and the country failed to meet the conditions necessary to lift the sanctions.
Sudan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said on Sunday, July 19, that the government had previously denied the allegations and stressed that the country does not produce, possess, or use chemical weapons.
Sudan accused the U.S. of not only failing to provide credible evidence, but also of ignoring the technical mechanisms and procedures stipulated in the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) before imposing sanctions on Sudan.
"This demonstrates that the sanctions are driven purely by political motives and do not reflect genuine concerns about preventing the use of chemical weapons," the ministry said.
The sanctions, scheduled to take effect on July 20, include a U.S. denial of loans, financial assistance and technical support to Sudan through international financial institutions, except for humanitarian aid.
The measure also prohibits the export of most U.S. goods and technology to Sudan, while tightening oversight of exports that could be used for sensitive or military purposes.
