TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korea's personal data protection authority said on Thursday, July 23, it had fined TikTok 10.3 billion won (US$7 million) for illegally collecting and using user behavior data from third-party services to personalize ads.
As ANTARA reported, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) stated that the fine was imposed on Singapore-based TikTok Pte. Ltd., the operator of the TikTok service in South Korea, for violating personal information protection laws.
TikTok was found to collect behavioral data from 9.45 million users in South Korea through tracking devices distributed to third-party websites and apps. This data is then used to serve personalized ads.
The Commission stated that TikTok did not provide adequate notice to users about the practice.
Separately, the authority also ordered remedial action against two Apple Inc. subsidiaries and imposed a combined fine of 252 million won for personal data protection violations.
The violations included collecting voice recordings and transcripts of Siri voice assistant users without consent. The commission said Apple collected Siri users' voice recordings and text transcripts without their permission until August 2019.
Although the company began requesting user consent for voice recordings in October 2019, authorities said Apple has not yet requested user consent for the collection of transcripts of these recordings, Yonhap reported on Thursday, July 23.
