TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A shallow tectonic earthquake, measuring 2.3 magnitudes, was felt in Purwakarta Regency, West Java, on Tuesday afternoon, December 2, 2025, at 4:33 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The epicenter was located on land, approximately 14 kilometers northwest of Purwakarta.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) determined the earthquake's source was shallow, originating at a depth of 9 kilometers.
"The earthquake was caused by the active fault activity in the local area," stated Hartanto, Head of the BMKG Tangerang II Agency, in a written statement following the event.
The earthquake’s coordinates were recorded at 6.49 degrees South Latitude and 107.34 degrees East Longitude. The seismic impact, based on public reports, was perceptible in the Purwakarta region with an intensity measured between II and III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity).
An intensity of II–III MMI means the shaking was felt by a few people and caused light hanging objects to sway (II MMI), and was distinctly felt inside houses, similar to the vibration caused by a passing truck (III MMI).
As of 5 p.m. WIB, BMKG reported no subsequent earthquake activity and confirmed there have been no reports of building damage. The public is advised to remain calm and disregard unverifiable rumors.
The recent Purwakarta earthquake fits the pattern of frequent seismicity in the region. Throughout November 2025, the BMKG Bandung Geophysical Station recorded 108 earthquakes that affected West Java and the surrounding areas.
The majority of these earthquakes originated from shallow depths, accounting for 97 incidents, while 11 other earthquakes stemmed from moderate depths.
According to Teguh Rahayu, Head of the BMKG Bandung Geophysical Station, only eight of the 108 earthquakes throughout November were actually felt by the public.
One notable felt event occurred on November 20, 2025, at 12:31 a.m. WIB. This M 3.4 earthquake, centered 20 kilometers southeast of Bandung Regency, generated tremors felt at an intensity of III–IV MMI in Pangalengan and II–III MMI in surrounding areas, including Banjaran, Ibun, Kertasari, Pasirjambu, Baleendah, and Margaasih.
