TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Technology company Qualcomm is reportedly preparing a new variant of the chipset Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 which will be launched this year. This information was revealed by technology leaker Digital Chat Station through the Weibo platform.
According to the leak, as reported by GSM Arena, the new chipset will have the model number SM8850-1-AB. From the performance side, the new version of Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is said to have recorded a Geekbench 6 score that is very similar to the standard version.
Digital Chat Station mentioned that the chipset will be used on phones priced below 4,000 yuan or around Rp 10.5 million. This indicates that the new variant will be positioned as a more affordable option compared to the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with the model number SM8850-AC.
Currently, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 family has three variants. In addition to the standard version, Qualcomm also has the SM8850-5-AC which is equipped with a seven-core processor, not an eight-core, and is used in the Oppo Find N6.
Meanwhile, the SM8850-1-AD variant is the chipset used by Samsung for the Galaxy S26 and Galaxy Z Fold8 series. If the rumor is true, then SM8850-1-AB will be the fourth iteration of Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
The presence of this new chipset is expected to be an option for flagship killer class mobile phone manufacturers, who want performance equivalent to the standard model at a lower price. Thus, manufacturers do not need to switch to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, which is expected to be priced higher.
