TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to make a working visit to Semarang, Central Java, on Thursday, July 29, 2026. The head of state is set to inaugurate the first phase of renovations to Semarang Tawang train station, a cultural heritage building.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, in a statement received on Thursday, said the renovations were carried out by state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Operational Area 4 Semarang for 240 days, from May 5 to December 30, 2025.
"This inauguration marks the initial phase of KAI's grand plan to restore the facade of Tawang Station to its original form, as designed by Dutch architect Sloth-Blauwboer and built by the Nederlandsch-Indische Maatschappij (NISM) from 1911 until its inauguration in 1914," he said.
As a building with cultural heritage status based on Minister of Culture and Tourism Regulation No. PM.57/PW007/MKP/2010, the renovation process involved cultural heritage experts to preserve the building's historical value and in accordance with Law No. 11 of 2010 concerning Cultural Heritage.
in its initial phase, the renovation includes the luxury waiting room, VIP room, and main hall. Authorities also repaired the corridors and worked to improve the drainage system to anticipate inundation and flooding during the rainy season.
"This renovation aims to restore the authenticity of the historical architectural facade, address issues of waterlogging and tidal flooding, while also improving facilities and service comfort for customers," he said.
Semarang Tawang Station is a large, Class A, Type A station that serves nearly all passenger train services passing through Semarang.
During the first semester of 2026, the station recorded excellent passenger service performance, ranking as the fourth busiest station in Indonesia with more than 2.15 million passenger boarding and a 99.45 percent on-time departure performance.
Besides its operational value, Tawang Station also holds significant national historical significance, serving as the departure point for the Bandung-bound Kereta Luar Biasa on September 10, 1945, and as the stopping point for the train carrying Indonesia's President Soekarno to negotiate the ceasefire following the Five-Day Battle of Semarang in October 1945.
President Prabowo's presence at today's inauguration reflects the government's commitment to preserving national cultural heritage while improving the quality of public transportation services.
"The government strives to encourage synergy between historical heritage preservation and modern infrastructure development, allowing historic buildings like Semarang Tawang Station to remain productive without diminishing their cultural and historical value for future generations," he concluded.
