TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto announced that the Indonesian government is negotiating the purchase of four additional Airbus A400M transport aircraft, adding to the existing contract for two units.
Currently, one A400M is already in service with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).
“We already have two active units and an option for four more. We may negotiate to acquire the additional four units,” Prabowo said at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta, on Monday, November 3, 2025.
The President highlighted that the new A400M aircraft will be equipped with air ambulance modules and forest firefighting equipment, further enhancing Indonesia’s military and humanitarian capabilities.
“I have instructed that air ambulance modules be ordered immediately for the A400M, along with equipment to handle forest fires,” he said.
Indonesia already operates C-130 Hercules aircraft fitted with air ambulance containers, and the A400M will complement these capabilities. Prabowo emphasized that the aircraft will strengthen the TNI’s role in assisting communities, particularly during natural disasters.
Earlier on Monday, Prabowo formally handed over the first A400M to the TNI at Halim Perdanakusuma. The aircraft, registered A-4001, arrived in Indonesia that morning after a three-day flight from Seville, Spain.
The Airbus A400M is a versatile military transport aircraft capable of carrying heavy loads, including armored vehicles and light helicopters. It can operate on short and unpaved runways, making it a strategic asset for both air operations and humanitarian missions across Indonesia.
The original contract for two A400M aircraft, in a multirole tanker and transport configuration, was signed during the Dubai Airshow in 2021 and became effective in 2022. During the same event, the Ministry of Defense also signed a Letter of Intent to potentially acquire four more A400M aircraft in the future.
