TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced that the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program has reached 20 million people to date. The number was achieved in just seven months since the program was launched in January 2025.
"Today, we have achieved remarkable progress. This morning, I received a report from the National Nutrition Agency that 20 million schoolchildren, out-of-school children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers receive MBG every day," said Prabowo during his speech at the annual session of the People's Consultative Assembly, the House of Representatives, and the Regional House of Representatives at Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday, August 15, 2025.
The head of state compared Indonesia's achievements to Brazil's results in a similar program. "In 7 months, we have achieved what other countries took more than a decade to accomplish. I have met with the President and the former President of Brazil. Brazil needed 11 years to reach 40 million Free Nutritious Meals every day," he said.
He mentioned the numerous management challenges that need to be addressed for the program to run smoothly, such as the physical construction of kitchens, supply chain management, as well as training for managers and implementers. As a result, the president thanked the head of the National Nutrition Agency, Dadan Hindayana, and his team for helping to reach this goal.
Expressions of gratitude were also directed to all supporters of the program. "I also thank all parties who have supported the implementation of MBG. The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Muhammadiyah, various organizations, cooperatives, and foundations that have been involved and worked together to establish Nutritious Meal Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) throughout Indonesia," said Prabowo.
In his speech, the president also stated that there are currently 5,800 SPPGs in 38 provinces. MBG is also claimed to have created 290,000 new jobs in kitchens or distribution centers, involving 1 million farmers, fishermen, breeders, and micro, small, and medium enterprises. The Chairman of the Gerindra Party declared that MBG has spurred economic growth in rural areas.
The government aims for the nutritious meal program to target 82.9 million people in 2025. The budget for implementation has been allocated in this year's State Budget, amounting to Rp71 trillion.
