TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the development of a national sports center to enhance athletes' abilities. The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Erick Thohir, stated that Prabowo has prepared 300 hectares of land for the development of the national sports center. However, the precise location cannot be announced yet as it is still in the administrative process.
"There will be dormitory facilities, training facilities, and top-notch healthcare available at the site. The President wants to ensure that our athletes receive the best facilities," Erick said after meeting Prabowo at the Presidential Palace Complex on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.
The National Sports Center will include sports academies, dormitory facilities, integrated training facilities, and health support services for athletes. These facilities are prepared to ensure that young athletes continue to receive a good education while undergoing intensive training.
"Young athletes who are 12 years old should not drop out of school, but they should also receive education while training, progressing through their careers, or achieving higher levels of achievement," he said.
Erick stated that Prabowo also emphasized the importance of prioritizing athletes' welfare. He requested that the LPDP (Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education Agency) athlete scholarships be properly allocated.
In addition to scholarships, Prabowo also opened up career opportunities for high-achieving athletes to serve in the public service sector. Prabowo is also reviewing the bonus scheme for SEA Games, Asian Games, and Olympic athletes, and the details will be further consulted with the Ministry of Finance.
"I can't reveal the figures yet because I have to consult with the Ministry of Finance first, as we need to create a big plan for the state budget," Erick said.
Erick mentioned that Prabowo decided to introduce a new legal framework that will serve as the basis for the government's focus on 21 Olympic sports. Meanwhile, the SEA Games and Asian Games will be the intermediate targets within the framework of long-term preparation.
"We really need to be efficient, with clear targets, so that sending athletes is no longer done haphazardly, but with specific targets for the sports branches sending athletes," he said.
