TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Portugal plans to recognize Palestine as a state in September. The office of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stated on Thursday that if the conditions proposed and largely agreed upon by countries at the UN conference are fulfilled, Portugal could recognize the State of Palestine as early as September.
This recognition is expected to take place at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, as reported by Diário de Notícias, citing Al Arabiya.
Before proceeding, Montenegro will consult with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and parliamentary parties. His office also stated that they have outlined the conditions for beginning the recognition process, which require an agreement with a group of countries with whom Portugal has been in ongoing dialogue.
Portugal's move follows a wave of other nations that have either recently recognized or are considering recognizing Palestine. These countries include Malta, Andorra, Australia, Canada, Finland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, and San Marino.
On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will recognize Palestine as a state during the upcoming September session of the UN General Assembly.

Last year, Ireland, Norway, and Spain recognized the State of Palestine. Other European nations, such as Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, and Romania, recognized Palestine in 1988, long before they joined the EU.
Approximately 147 of 193 UN member states currently recognize Palestine as a nation. In November 2012, the UN General Assembly approved de facto recognition of the sovereign state of Palestine by upgrading its observer status from an "entity" to a "non-member state."
