TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Presidential Palace responds to a demonstration demanding the removal of Pati Regent Sudewo after he raised the rural and urban land and building tax (PBB-P2) by up to 250 percent.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi has called on all parties to exercise restraint. He stated that the central government has also communicated with Sudewo and the Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi.
"We also respect all the demonstrations carried out by the people of Pati," said Prasetyo at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, August 13, 2025.
Prasetyo said the government is also monitoring the steps of the Pati's Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), which will be impeaching Sudewo.
Thousands of residents of Pati staged a demonstration today demanding Sudewo's removal. The demonstration began due to the policy of the Pati Regency Government to raise the rural and urban land and building tax (PBB-P2) by up to 250 percent. Despite the tax hike still being within the maximum limit and not applying to all tax objects, as some only had a 50 percent increase, the residents still rejected it.
Residents were also angered by Sudewo's statement challenging his people to stage a demonstration with 5,000 or even 50,000 people. As a result, the residents carried out a riot.
Simultaneously with the demonstration, the Pati's DPRD formed a Special Committee for an Impeachment Inquiry against Pati Regent Sudewo today.
The Impeachment Inquiry Committee is formed because Regent Sudewo is considered to have violated his oath and promise as regent. Several issues questioned by DPRD members include deciding for Regent Sudewo to raise the rural and urban land and building tax (PBB-P2) by up to 250 percent.
The Pati's DPRD consists of 50 members, who come from eight political parties. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) holds the most seats in Pati's DPRD, a total of 14. Meanwhile, the Gerindra Party has 6 seats in the Council.
Regent Sudewo respects the decision of the DPRD. "It is the impeachment right held by the DPRD. So, I respect that impeachment right," he said at the Pati Regency Hall, on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
Previously, Sudewo met with demonstrators at the Alun-Alun Pati in front of his office. The Gerindra Party politician met the demonstrators using a police tactical vehicle.
"I sincerely apologize," he said over the loudspeaker.
However, Sudewo was pelted with bottles of mineral water and sandals. Security personnel then protected Sudewo using shields. Sudewo then re-entered the car.
