Pakistan's Ambassador to Indonesia Presses UN to Resolve Kashmir Dispute

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pakistan’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, has urged the international community to push for the full implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions concerning the Kashmir conflict with India.

He made this statement during the commemoration of Youm-e-Istehsal at the Embassy of Pakistan in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

"The House demanded the immediate implementation of all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, which call for a free and impartial plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir," Chaudhri said. The event marked six years since India revoked the special autonomous status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019.

Three Dimensions of Dispute

Chaudhri described the Jammu and Kashmir conflict as involving three critical aspects: international law, peace and security, and human rights.

He argued that India’s move to strip the region of its special status was aimed at consolidating its unlawful occupation.

"The resolution affirmed that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute is not an internal matter of India but a global issue requiring a just resolution in accordance with UNSC resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people," he emphasized.

He reiterated that resolving the conflict peacefully, in line with UN mandates, is essential for lasting peace.

One of the key resolutions referenced is UNSC Resolution 47 of 1948, which calls for restoring peace and holding a plebiscite to determine the will of the people in Jammu and Kashmir.

Chaudhri also underscored the dispute’s impact on regional stability. He said a peaceful solution is necessary to ensure lasting security in South Asia.

He added that the people of Kashmir must be allowed to determine their own future. "We urge India, as well as the international community, to call on India to release all Kashmiri youth and Kashmiri leaders who are currently arbitrarily imprisoned," he said.

Conflict Escalation in April

Tensions between India and Pakistan flared again after a terrorist attack near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025.

According to Al Jazeera, 26 people were killed, including one Nepalese national. The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Following the incident, forces from both sides exchanged gunfire along the Line of Control, the de facto border in the disputed region. The United Nations urged both countries to exercise restraint and avoid a broader military conflict.

India later responded by withdrawing from the Indus Waters Treaty. In retaliation, Pakistan halted an irrigation project and closed its airspace to Indian aircraft. These moves have further strained diplomatic relations between the two nuclear-armed nations.

India and Pakistan have disputed control over Kashmir since their independence in 1947. Although the region is divided between them, both nations claim it in full. The conflict has led to three major wars and recurring armed clashes over the decades.
