TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 150 Sudanese women have reportedly been subjected to rape and sexual assault while fleeing the city of El-Fasher in North Darfur.

The information was provided by the civil group General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur on Friday, November 7, according to Anadolu.

Spokesperson Adam Regal told Sudan Tribune that militia from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary pursued civilians along escape routes, detaining some in the Qarni area. Thousands remain trapped, including children separated from their families.

Regal also reported that more than 1,300 people have been injured by gunfire, over 1,200 children are suffering from malnutrition, and roughly 700 elderly people are in critical condition.

He added that more than 15,000 survivors have reached the town of Tawila, located about 60 kilometers west of El-Fasher, many of them weakened from injuries and violence endured during their flight.

Refugee Crisis in Tawila

Regal urged international organizations and humanitarian agencies to immediately provide support to survivors.

He called for life-saving medicine, food, clean water, shelter, sanitation facilities, and psychological support, including safe spaces for children traumatized by the violence.

Tawila is currently hosting more than one million internally displaced people after months of receiving civilians fleeing violence in North Darfur. Regal warned that the situation requires urgent humanitarian intervention to meet basic needs.

Brutal Attacks Following El-Fasher’s Capture

Reports from local and international organizations indicate that the RSF captured El-Fasher on October 26 and carried out massacres of civilians in the aftermath. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that over 81,000 people have fled El-Fasher and surrounding areas since the RSF takeover.

According to Al Jazeera, the United Nations Human Rights Office in Sudan reported that attacks in El-Fasher have intensified since the city fell to the RSF last month.

Over the past 10 days, el-Fasher has witnessed an escalation of brutal attacks. It has become a city of grief,” said Li Fung, the UNHR representative in Sudan, in a video uploaded on X on Saturday.

Fung added that hundreds of people, including women and children, have died, while many wounded victims are seeking refuge in hospitals and schools.

Hundreds have been killed, including women, children and the wounded, who sought safety in hospitals and schools. Entire families were cut down as they fled. Others have simply vanished,” he said.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a war between the military and RSF forces. The conflict has claimed thousands of lives and forced millions to flee their homes.
