TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A hospital in eastern Germany issued an apology on Monday after publishing a list of newborn babies that included the name Yahya Sinwar. The name Yahya Sinwar is synonymous with the former leader of the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza.
As quoted from Middle East Monitor, the delivery room at Leipzig University Hospital explained that these names were only published upon request or consent from the parents.
In a statement on Instagram on Monday, the clinic said, "Today we published the first names of the newborns on our obstetrics channel – as we do every day."
"One of the names is currently in a political context, which has caused irritation or incomprehension among some users."
The hospital said it would review its internal procedures to improve sensitivity in handling similar cases moving forward.
Yahya Sinwar was a Hamas leader who was killed by the Israeli army in southern Gaza in October 2024. He was shot dead by Israel nearly a year after the war against Hamas since October 2023.
After Yahya Sinwar's death, Israel continued to pursue other members of his family. According to Anadolu, in May 2025, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed that the army likely killed Mohammed Sinwar, a Hamas commander and Yahya Sinwar's brother.
The Israeli public broadcaster KAN previously reported that Sinwar's body was found in an underground tunnel in the southern city of Khan Younis, along with the bodies of 10 of his aides.
