TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has asked President Prabowo Subianto for one year to improve the performance of the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. According to Purbaya, the agency is not reflecting good images to the media, the general public, and the country's top leadership.

Purbaya said he had held an internal meeting with officials from the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. In the meeting, he conveyed that the agency must expeditiously improve its performance.

"I told them, I have asked for the president to leave us for one year, to give me time to improve the Customs and Excise," the minister told reporters at the parliament complex, Thursday, November 27, 2025.

The state treasurer revealed that Customs and Excise could face disbandment over continued shortcomings as happened in the past with SGS.

SGS, or Société Générale de Surveillance, is a Swiss inspection company that temporarily took over Customs and Excise during the Soeharto era after Finance Minister Ali Wardhana froze the agency amid widespread corruption cases.

"I said, if we fail to improve, 16,000 Customs and Excise employees will be dismissed," said Purbaya, adding that the ministry is also working to improve the agency. Part of the efforts is applying AI assistance at Customs and Excise stations to quickly detect under-invoicing.
