TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake has shaken the region of Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, on Sunday evening, July 26, 2026. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the earthquake's strength at a Magnitude of 5.3 after updating it from the previous information of M5.5.
It occurred precisely at 18:57 local time (WITA), the earthquake shook from its epicenter located inland, 18 kilometers northeast of Kupang. It had a depth of 44 kilometers.
In a statement shared by the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, Wijayanto, the earthquake that occurred is a type of shallow earthquake due to subduction activity. This means the earthquake's center is in the megathrust zone.
Based on the BMKG's estimated shaking intensity map, the earthquake was felt most strongly at an intensity level of V MMI. At this level, the vibration was felt by almost all residents, many people woke up, earthenware broke, objects were scattered, poles and large items appeared to shake, and bell pendulums could stop.
Shaking like this was mapped in Sulamu, Kupang Regency; West Fatuleu, Kupang Regency; East Kupang, Kupang Regency; Oelamasi City. Meanwhile, several other areas were shaken at a level of IV MMI, namely in Kupang City; Soe City, South Central Timor Regency; Kefamenanu City, North Central Timor Regency; Baa City, Rote Ndao Regency.
Quoting Antara, the shaking caused by the earthquake made residents panic and run out of one of the shopping centers in Kupang. "The quake happened twice. The first one felt gentle, but the second one was stronger," said Lia, one of the visitors at the shopping center.
As of Monday morning, July 27, 2026, BMKG still recorded the earthquake in Kupang as the most recent earthquake whose shaking could be felt in the Indonesian region.
