TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  An explosion followed by a major fire struck a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Bulk Filling Station (SPBE) on Jalan Cinyosog, Cimuning Village, Mustikajaya District, Bekasi City, on Wednesday night, April 1, 2026, leaving at least ten people seriously injured and triggering panic among nearby residents.

The incident occurred at around 9:00 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Time), when residents reported hearing three successive explosions accompanied by a strong of gas that had spread across the area shortly beforehand.

A local resident, Bayu (40), said the smell of gas had been noticeable for about 15 to 20 minutes prior to the blast, allegedly originating from a leak during the filling process.

“Not long afterward, an explosion occurred from one point and immediately spread because the gas had already filled the area,” he said, adding that flames quickly intensified following the first blast. “There were three explosions. It happened very quickly.”

The explosions sparked a large fire that forced residents to flee their homes as flames grew and spread around the facility. Some residents were caught in the initial blast, while others evacuated amid the chaos.

Emergency response teams, including the Bekasi City Fire and Rescue Department, were deployed shortly after the incident. Acting head of the department, Heryanto, said his team received the report at around 8:00 p.m. WIB and immediately rushed to the scene.

Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately five hours before successfully extinguishing it at around 1:00 a.m. WIB on Thursday, April 2. Cooling efforts continued afterward, focusing on the suspected origin point of the fire to prevent reignition.

“There is still one point that we are continuing to cool down. We will ensure it is completely safe before declaring it fully handled,” Heryanto said.

Meanwhile, ten victims were evacuated from the scene, all suffering severe burn injuries. Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) volunteer Indra Septian said the victims sustained burns covering more than 50 percent of their bodies, although the figures remain preliminary.

The injured were transported to several hospitals for treatment, including Citra Arafiq Hospital, Kartika Husada Setu Hospital, Bekasi City Regional Hospital, and Bekasi Regency Regional Hospital.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether the victims were local residents or workers at the facility.

During the evacuation, PMI deployed three personnel and one ambulance, supported by more than 30 ambulances from various volunteer groups assisting in the emergency response.

Bekasi City Metro Police Chief Senior Commissioner Kusumo Wahyu Bintoro said officers are still collecting data on the total number of victims and assessing damage to surrounding homes.

“We are still collecting data, including on the number of victims and affected houses. Please allow time,” he said.

Preliminary indications suggest the explosion was triggered by a gas leak, but authorities have yet to release an official cause as investigations continue.
