TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Finance Minister Purbaya said relief efforts for the Sumatra floods and landslides still rely on regional government budgets. The disasters occurred in several cities and regencies across North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh.

According to Purbaya, until now, the regional governments have not requested additional budget to handle the disasters. "The regional governments have yet to request it from me. It appears they are tapping into existing budget," the minister told reporters after attending Bank Indonesia's Annual Meeting in Jakarta, Friday, November 28, 2025.

The central government, through the Ministry of Social Affairs, has distributed logistical aid of Rp2.6 billion in estimated values. These aids include essential needs for residents, family supplies, emergency shelters, and public kitchen services that have reached thousands of residents.

The logistical assistance was directly sent from various Central Warehouses and the Main Center for Social Welfare Education and Training to the disaster locations. "The Ministry of Social Affairs also continues to monitor developments on the ground and ensure that assistance reaches those in need," said Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf or Gus Ipul in a written statement on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

As of Friday afternoon, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted a total of 174 fatalities and 12,546 families displaced due to this disaster. However, until now, the government has no plans to declare national disaster status to the situation in Sumatra.

According to the Head of the National Disaster Management Agency or BNPB, Lieutenant General TNI Suharyanto, the disasters that struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra are still classified as provincial-level regional disasters. "The national disaster status that has been declared by Indonesia are Covid-19 and the 2004 Aceh Tsunami," said Suharyanto in a press conference broadcast on BNPB's official YouTube channel on Friday, November 28, 2025.
