TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Japanese government plans to tighten permanent residency requirements for foreigners by setting incomes above the Japanese household average and a minimum threshold for projected pension benefits.
On Saturday, a source familiar with the matter said that the government will revise the relevant guidelines on 1 October and, in principle, start applying them to applications submitted by April 2027, according to ANTARA.
Under current guidelines, the three requirements for permanent residency are good conduct, having assets or skills to live independently, and fulfilling Japan's best interests.
Under the revision, applicants must also have an annual income above the Japanese household average and a projected retirement benefit equivalent to 30 years of employee pension plan participation.
If the projected retirement benefit does not meet the limit, the applicant can cover the shortfall with savings or other assets.
In assessing Japan's best interests, the new rules will also take into account the applicant's Japanese language ability and understanding of the country's regulations.
By the end of 2025, 947,000 people will have permanent residency status in Japan.
