TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government plans to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems at public facilities across the city. Governor Pramono Anung and Deputy Governor Rano Karno discussed the initiative after steel plates were stolen from a pedestrian bridge (JPO) on Daan Mogot Street, Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta, in April.
Governor Pramono suspects theft as the cause. "We will deploy CCTV cameras citywide and assign officers to monitor these areas," he said at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday, April 15.
Pramono noted that thefts of public facilities are a persistent problem in Jakarta, citing similar cases in the Semanggi area of Central Jakarta, where streetlights in a park were allegedly stolen.
Speaking separately, Deputy Governor Rano Karno emphasized that the Daan Mogot bridge theft is not isolated. "Other bridges have faced similar issues," said Rano, a former Banten governor.
The Jakarta Public Works Department has begun repairing the Daan Mogot pedestrian bridge, with repairs expected to be completed within one to two days.
Rano highlighted the need for expanded CCTV surveillance, noting that constant human monitoring is impractical. "Even with Satpol PP officers’ best efforts, 24-hour surveillance is unfeasible. We will also involve the community to help protect these areas," he said during an inspection of the Daan Mogot Bridge on April 15.
Rano, a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), added that the CCTV initiative fulfills his and Pramono’s campaign promises. "Next year, we will install CCTV systems in neighborhoods, including at the RT and RW levels," he said.
