TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on Thursday, August 21, 2025, announced that Israel will soon resume negotiations to free all hostages held in Gaza and end the war. However, Netanyahu emphasized that this step will only be taken on conditions acceptable to Israel.
"At the same time, I have issued instructions to begin immediate negotiations for the release of all our hostages and an end to the war on terms acceptable to Israel," Netanyahu stated, as reported by CNA.
Ceasefire Proposal
Netanyahu's statement was in response to the proposed temporary ceasefire put forward by Egypt and Qatar, which Hamas accepted last Monday. Israel will send negotiators after the meeting location is determined.
The proposal includes a 60-day ceasefire and a hostage exchange: Hamas will release 10 live hostages and 18 bodies, while Israel will free around 200 Palestinian prisoners. After the temporary ceasefire, Hamas and Israel are expected to begin discussions for a permanent agreement that includes the release of all remaining hostages.
Israeli Military Plan
Despite opening the space for negotiations, Netanyahu affirmed the continuation of the military operation plan in Gaza City. The plan was approved by the Israeli Security Cabinet earlier this month, chaired by Netanyahu.
According to Al Jazeera, a major operation in Gaza City could commence in a few days after Netanyahu gives the final approval. Israel has escalated attacks in the city, deploying tanks, calling up 60,000 reserve troops, and extending the service of 20,000 soldiers.
Current Casualties and Humanitarian Crisis
As of Thursday, August 21, the Gaza Health Ministry reported at least 70 people killed due to Israeli gunfire in the last 24 hours, including eight in a single house in Sabra, Gaza City. Additionally, at least 48 Palestinians have died due to Israeli attacks in various locations, including 16 aid workers shot at the GHF distribution point. Two people died of starvation in the last 24 hours, bringing the total famine victims due to Israel's blockade to 271, including 112 children.
Amid these conditions, hundreds of residents also staged protests in Gaza City on Thursday. They carried banners reading "Save Gaza, enough" and "Gaza is dying by the killing, hunger and oppression."
